tlug: Re: gcc question



Thanks to Peter Linsley and Fredric Fredricson for their very helpful
responses.  

I had thought that, unlike using a char array,  using *char somehow magically
obviated allocating a fixed amount of memory for a string.  As I
understand it now, though, the * char declaration just allocates enough space
to hold the pointed-to address (unsigned int?), but the memory for the string
itself must still be allocated.   It's all becoming clearer . . .
